Yes, exactly!  In Ukraine, there are many more old ladies than old men (because Ukrainian and Russian men tend to drink/smoke themselves to death long before), and the babushkas sit outside their apartment blocks, watching everyone come and go and commenting/commanding on everyone's business.  Nothing is more terrifying than a babushka in full battle mode, waving her arms at you (even if you don't know what she is saying).

During the riots in the city center in Kiev, babushkas would occasionally step up and get into the faces of the police (who had no problems killing men), shouting and pointing.  The policemen cringed and took it.

Good call, PP.  Women over about 65 are very much respected here.  They rule the place.  So if you can keep your head down and stay alive between about 30 and 65, you will be respected by men.[/quote]
