I would prefer a happy/triumphant ending. But, I think there is something good about the way they did it. Alicia started off the series by fulfilling her obligation to her husband (i.e. standing by his side being "the good wife"). She played the role of the wife (much to my dismay through the whole 7 years) just to appease others/husband/kids. She ended the series by still trying to fulfill her perceived obligation and ultimately lost herself and her future happiness. By putting her own desires/goals second to fulfilling what she thought she had to do for her husband (taking the selfless route in her mind), she betrayed her work relationship to Diane and her personal relationship to Jason. Like so many women, we think we are helping everyone by being the martyr and ultimately, we are left disappointed, empty, and alone. That is the message of the Good Wife.
+1000 totally agree with that analysis. The creators wanted to end it on a more nuanced note that the fairy tale happy ending.
