OP here. We're going to use practice slots to makeup Saturday's games, so the kids won't miss the reps. In fact, in some ways a makeup is better. The dedicated players will come, and the ones who waste my time will have another "commitment". So the good players get to play the whole game. I will say, people who got mad at me are losers. If you're gonna be the best, you gotta lay it on the line each and every day. I quote Coach K from that commercial to my coach-pitch kids, telling them I want them to be the best they can be each and every day. If they do that, I got their back and will pour out my soul coaching them. I will back them up if they don't like a call; I'll get MYSELF thrown out so they can keep playing. In return, they bust their butts for me so we can build a program, win some hardware, and bring back some pride to Arlington.
What do you say about the people defending the cancellation to protect the field itself? To me this makes the most sense, you all can complain about it needless cancellations but I think a wrecked field would actually be worth the fuss...
I hear you; it's a really tough question. Ultimately I think the soccer club model is best. You need to identify your best talents and make things work for them. You can't bend over backwards to get "fairness" so that your prospects get 9:00 AM games canceled for wet fields, while untalented teams have players miss their 3:00 PM games on dried fields for piano lessons or catechism classes. Since field prep happens early, you need lots of those "house teams" to work the fields. Or you use the fees to pay professional groundskeepers. In the current structure, you have to cut down on soccer and lacrosse teams chewing up our fields. You also MUST stop the pick-up soccer games that guys try to play on Saturday nights or Sunday mornings. They get kicked off soccer fields and come to multi-use fields like those hosting coach-pitch. But ultimately, you need the low-level players to subsidize the talented ones. That's just how it is.
