My neighbor's kid passed up on Carnegie Mellon, MIT, and a couple other top shelf schools for UMCP. Simple reason, instate tuition. Since the downturn of the economy and horrible job market, it just doesn't make sense to go into debt for the high price institutions.
This is us. DD was not happy about it, but she wasn't paying either, and we refused to take out loans. She's happy now, so all's well that ends well....
The STEM subjects, journalism, business and education majors are highly ranked. UMD seems to crank out incredible numbers of entrepreneurs and the alumni are star-studded. UMD won the "championship " for the nations most influential and/or famous alumni. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dc-sports-bog/wp/2015/03/17/how-maryland-won-a-celebrity-alumni-ncaa-bracket/ I don't think many schools in the country can compete with the internship / job opportunities UMD enjoys being 10 minutes from the Capitol Building, 2 metro lines and having installations of the National Archives/Phillips Collection(on the way)/ NASA / NOAA / Homeland Security/ FDA/ USDA/ the National Weather Prediction Facility/ The American Physics Institute/ Raytheon / The center for International language on campus . Plus UMD has more Nobel / Academy Award/ Emmy / fields medal (mathematics Nobel)/ Pulitzer alumni and national championships than any school in the ACC. The Soccer, Field Hockey, men's / women's basketball and lacrosse are perennial national championship contenders. Being a terp is a lot of fun.
