More importantly, the Band Aid song is terrible because it is so sanctimonious. Yeah, thise starving people in a war-torn nation that is largely not christian are only sad because they don't know that it's christmas. The important thing is to be generous one day every year so that we can share the christmas spirit, not to, say, work towards universal peace and prosperity all our lives. Just on Christmas.
That's one of my favorites. And I can't help but think we've been pouring money into various parts of Africa for decades and they're still crap. It's about time we stop. I don't care if that makes me sound anti-Christmas, we have bigger fish to fry right here. It's got to end somewhere.
We actually don't pour money into Africa, and the money we do spend for health and development is doing a load of good. Did you know that HIV infections are down, treatment is up, and fewer kids are orphaned by the infection? That infant mortality is down, maternal mortality is down, and that immunization rates are up? That there are a few diseases, like polio and some parasites that are on the brink of being eradicated? That eradication of malaria is something we can actually think about? All of that has been done in part by your tax dollars. A tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of each dollar you pay in taxes, yes. Most of your foreign aid penny goes to Israel and Egypt and a few other big recipients. Very little goes to help kids and moms in Africa, but that bit that does...it makes a difference. Merry Christmas.
Thank you for posting!
