Jacqueline Mars, who came in at No. 19, is the richest person in the Washington region by a wide margin. Mars is a co-owner of Mars Inc., the McLean-based candy, food and beverage firm. Forbes says Mars has personal wealth of $22.2 billion — five times the net worth of Ted Lerner, the second-richest local resident. The top spot on the Forbes 400 list, for the 21st consecutive year, belongs to Bill Gates, with personal wealth of $81.2 billion. In second place was Warren Buffett, with $67.8 billion. It took riches of about $1.4 billion to make the exclusive list. The Washington area boasts 16 residents with a fortune of at least $1 billion.
