Americans seem to have such a hard time, just walking away. I am not making fun of Americans and I am not suggesting that "just walking away" is the best solution to relationship problems. I think I am being as factual as possible when generalizing. In many ways I admire this trait, compared to the "flexible" nature of northern Europeans in relationships. My husband is an American. Had I been him, I would have walked away from me a long time ago, many times.
Americans have hard time walking away from marriages because it's looked down upon by the society which is still quite religious compared to more secular Europe, because of the divorce laws and because of the American dream and importance of projecting an image of a perfect family which is a house in suburbs, wife, kids, a dog or dogs or other pets, two cars.
Actually aren't divorce rates for most of Europe (Scandinavia excluded) lower than those in the USA?
it's actually the exact opposite. americans divorce much more than other rich nations, including canada, australia. it's because they want perfection, pursue ever more happiness etc.
so damn expensive, dis-entangling the web of property and finances is very painful. Everyone in the process has a hand out.
