She loved Patrick who died on the Titanic, duped by fake Patrick, got dumped then jilted at the alter by Strallan, then her next love is murdered. She has an indifferent mother and is continually thwarted by a nasty mean sister. It was extremely selfish to take a kid away from two loving homes. An emotional cripple isn't the best for a kid.
