ok... first, may I be the 100th person to say THANK YOU. My DC-based, all-male led non-profit's personnel manual says only 12. So I will be raising this. But I'm a little confused about something... do you get 6 weeks of medical leave for a vaginal birth (or 8 for C-sec) PLUS 16 weeks for family leave? I've read the answers on this and people say they happen "in tandem," but I'm sorry I don't understand what that means. I get if you are diagnose with something irregular either pre or post birth, you have up to 16 weeks for medical leave. But let's say in the "normal" circumstance... do you get 16 plus 6/8 or just the 16? THANKS!
Yes, the 6 or 8 weeks leave (for vaginal or c-sec) would come out of the allowable 16 weeks for short term disability. FMLA, is another separate 16 weeks. So you can heal and then start your maternity leave.
