I knew people who had good grades from good schools who went on to get a teaching cert. Many didn't have ed major or minor [not offered at their colleges or universities]. Why did they do? Reduced hours and summer off and extra-curricular interests. Some people wanted to coach. Some friends also had ed majors or minors for similar reasons. Usually people wanted to stay in their home town area.
This describes me. An excellent student - great grades in HS and in college. Studied early childhood in college. Minored in psychology. But, I did not do it because of summers off or other interests - this actually never factored into my decision to teach. I did it because I LOVE working with children - it was something I was good at, even as a child, and knew I wanted to teach since I was 8 years old. It has been a career that has rewarded me greatly - not financially, but in terms of knowing that I have made a difference in hundreds of kids’ lives. I can confidently say that I taught kids to love learning.
