Just declined a 1st grade spot at Inspired Teaching.
Why? Where is your 1st grader instead?
Only one(DS1) of our twins was waitlisted. The other(DS2) was not waitlisted because he got into our first choice. We ended up staying at our IB DCPS because we never got a call from our first choice for the waitlisted kid(DS1), even though they said he'd most likely get a spot. I'd forgotten that DS1 was still on any waitlist until Inspired Teaching called, yesterday. We had to decline because I don't imagine that we'd be lucky enough for another 1st grade spot to open up for DS2 since we'd have to put him at the bottom of the list.
Not to make you feel terrible, since you already declined, but what about sibling preference?
Sibling preference only helps if there's another spot open. There may not be another spot this year. Plus as her second kid wasn't even on the wait list it's highly unlikely.
DP, but if she'd accepted the IT spot this year for DS1, wouldn't her DS2 have sibling preference for next year? Maybe PP can't do/doesn't want to do 2 commutes, but if IT was really a serious consideration and she could do 2 commutes for a year, wouldn't each twin get sib preference at the other twin's school next year? I would have definitely taken that gamble because most likely one twin at least would get into the other's school, and you'd have both twins at a school you were (hopefully) excited about.
I do drop-off/pick-up alone. DH is out the door before we even wake up. Our current school doesn't open the doors until 8:15 (no before care). I wouldn't be able to get the other child across town in time. We don't own a car so the commute would include 2 trains and a bus. I wouldn't have minded doing the commute if both kids had landed there. Even with sibling preference, getting another 1st grade spot might be a long shot.
