OP here, I didn't think the joke was racist (otherwise why would I say it?!). But someone called me racist for the joke. Maybe they got it after I explained it's a real phenomenon. Of course they could have also just thought the same of me. I won't be making that joke again. Unless of course someone does determine one of the local places is in fact cooking up the cats....[/quote]
I think it all depends on your definition of "racism."[b] Some people think racism requires a suggestion that one race is superior/inferior to another.  Other people think any stereotyping of behavior based on race is racism. Still others believe that only people whose race has maintained long-term political power (i.e., whites in the US) can be racist, and so no one else can be racist no matter what they do[/b].  Lots of people kind of stir together all these different definitions, or change their definition depending on the situation.  So I guess the answer is "maybe ... maybe not."[/quote]
