OP here, I didn't think the joke was racist (otherwise why would I say it?!). But someone called me racist for the joke. Maybe they got it after I explained it's a real phenomenon. Of course they could have also just thought the same of me. I won't be making that joke again. Unless of course someone does determine one of the local places is in fact cooking up the cats....[/quote]
I think it all depends on your definition of "racism." Some people think racism requires a suggestion that one race is superior/inferior to another.  Other people think any stereotyping of behavior based on race is racism. Still others believe that only people whose race has maintained long-term political power (i.e., whites in the US) can be racist, and so no one else can be racist no matter what they do.  Lots of people kind of stir together all these different definitions, or change their definition depending on the situation.  So I guess the answer is "maybe ... maybe not."[/quote]
