With obvious caveats regarding the need for situational awareness in an urban environment, I can speak to the safety of the Gonzaga neighborhood. First of all, it is six blocks from the US Capitol, three from Union Station. Everything south of K street is and has been extremely safe for decades, and this is the only direction Gonzaga boys would ever be walking from. Before I was of driving age (late 90s) I would metro to Union and walk to campus in the morning and was never once hassled. There was rarely a reason to head north of K by foot, aside from volunteering at SOME or The Perry School, but even walking by Sursum Corda during the daytime was never an issue. Now, flash forward almost two decades and you have a great deal of not only development around NoMa, but also gentrification from Bloomingdale and southward down North Cap, while any gap has been closed between H Street coridor to the east, Penn Quarter to the west and Mt Vernon/Convention Center to the northwest. My company recently moved into a newly constructed building just a few blocks south of Eye Street, so I get to see the contrast every day. Bottom line: as long as you can deal with the fact that homeless people exist, you should not be overly concerned about the safety around Gonzaga. Gonzaga and O'Connell are the only two Catholic schools within a reasonable proximity to me in Arlington, although I must say the driving commute is worse than I remember.
