We got in absolutely nowhere for kindergarten. Compared to previous years our numbers look good, because we're under 100 for most of them, but the numbers of applicants and places are much lower for kindergarten. I can expect very little movement. Really depressed because we have no other option.
Sorry you had bad luck with the lottery. You'll have to enroll in your IB kindergarten class, right?
Yes, that's true. And I guess it's where we'll end up. I'm not thrilled about the school, particularly the unenthusiastic teachers, but also Tools of the Mind. My kid does pretty well at "self regulation" and is already way ahead of what they will be teaching academically. I don't know a single family in the neighborhood sending their kid their for K.
You'll meet them, because you weren't the only parent in the entire neighborhood that was shut out.
Actually, of the many families I know in the neighborhood, I was. Everyone else already had decent kindergarten options having got lucky in previous years lotteries. Yes, there are kids at that school, but they are not active in the community and they are not families that I know. We have a neighborhood listserv with hundreds of parents on it. Literally NOBODY on that list serv sends their kids there for kindergarten. A few go there for PS3 and PK4 but by K they find somewhere else to go.
Time to meet the families with kids your kid's age! This year, there will be people on your listserv sending kids to K, because they will have been shut out too. Unless you're the only one in the entire neighborhood who has a kindergartner this year? Did you post on your list serve yet?
I know almost all of the families with kids my kid's age. This school also takes inboundary kids from east of our neighborhood. Most of the kids that go there are from that neighborhood, which is considerably less gentrified. (this is not a race issue. there are many AA families in my part of the neighborhood, and like the white families, they too send their kids to charters.) There is literally NOBODY on our list serve that sends their kids to that school for kindergarten. Of course, the list serve skews toward the higher socio economic families, but it is otherwise very diverse. They send their kids everywhere but the inbound school. Some try it for PS3 and PS4, but they ALL switch for/before K.
So you already know that this year, most of the families with kids your kid's age have gotten into a spot other than your IB school? Your list serve must have been busy this morning! Well, I'm sorry that you're the only family in the neighborhood that didn't get into another place. Do you know if any of the other kindergartener families will be declining their spots? I already know of a few families declining spots at my IB school.
No, I already know that very few neighborhood families with kindergartners were playing the lottery - in fact, I only know one other and their plan was private if they didn't get lucky. All the dozens of other K kids are already at charters they love or have moved or are planning to move. But mainly, at charters that they love.
