When I wear make-up or lipstick to work, it is because I choose to do so, not because some hens think make-up is necessary to make me look "polished." My husband has a few lines and spots on his face and no one is suggesting HE smooth it out with foundaiton. He puts on a moisturizer and goes on his way. This just reeks of sexism, and the worst kind: the kind OTHER women perpetuate. Yuck.
I don't know if I agree with you that this is sexist. Where I work, all men wear ties. My DH says those aren't very comfortable - about how I feel about makeup. Also, there's a bit of an unwritten rule that there are only three acceptable colors for men's suits: black, navy, and grey. But women have a much wider range of acceptable color choices as long as whatever they're wearing is professional and modest. Is this sexist? I definitely don't think so - it's all about what's appropriate for a particular situation. I personally equate makeup to just another unfortunately necessary part of a professional or formal outfit. But then again, I was raised by pretty traditional (read: old fashioned :) ) parents, and I have a similar outlook myself. YMMV.
