OP, don't do it. We're three years in with two kids in private. We have a HHI of $350K, no student loan payments and a $3700/month mortgage. We're seriously considering pulling our kids out because it's just becoming too stressful financially. One child was totally affordable, but the approx. $60K/year is just not working with our budget. Our kids are having such an amazing experience and it makes me sick to even think about moving them... I wish we had never started this path because now we'll know what we're missing if we leave.
We are in the same place financially as you, PP, but are trying to stick it out for middle school with two DCs because we feel middle school years are critical and our DCs need the extra support they did not get in the public school, and could benefit from the smaller learning environment. It is a sacrifice but I don't want to look back with regret and I feel the DCs would fall through the cracks at our public school, which is good but not enough for DCs. I think you have to do what is best for your family. My DCs have some special needs and we feel we need to keep them where they are for now.
