We recently purchased and the fact that the kitchen had not been recently re modeled since 1960 was a plus for us. This is because owners may have done a renovation much like the one here with the dark country cabinets and beige tile, which would have made them feel they had added value to the house, they would want some of their money back, meanwhile we would have been wondering if we could afford the hassle and cash to pull it out and do something we could live with. If you are really thinking about resale value and appealing to a particular buyer this is very hard to predict, but you can research current trends in contemporary kitchen design to get you some of the way there.
