Believe that starting at 12U has to do with the market. This area just draws fewer girls for Tier1. At 12U the better girls are likely still playing co-ed, or at least there's a split and you can't field as competitive a team. In addition, Nationals for Tier 1 girls doesn't start until 14U. I know Loudon/Little Caps has been talking about adding a Tier 1 girls team. IMO that's a bad idea. Even at boys neither Little Caps/TM is fielding a very competitive team. If you combined the two you could have a much more successful team, the results would be similar if not worse by dividing the Tier 1 level girls in the area. It is a challenge for girls on both sides of the river to get to Rockville, but it's doable. In the past several years there have been Pride girls coming from as far as Leesburg/Haymarket/Dumfries/Bluemont on the VA side as well as Easton and Baltimore area on MD side. None of those commutes is great, but people make them work.
It's too bad because I feel like if you made a super team of pure birth year 2014s and 2015s from MYHA, STJ, and Reston you would have AA+ or AAA teams at those two birth years(probably at other ages too). Sprinkle in a few other players from local teams and they would be really competitive. I feel like MYHA is part way there with the 12U Blue which was basically a 2014 team last year. But it's a pipe dream to think those three places would ever combine to make a super team.
100%. This is a few years ago now but for my daughter's birth year pretty big chunks of the 10U AA girls teams from PA, NJ, NY went on to play Tier 1 girls in 12U and older. Looking at the AGHF standings and top scorers this year, it looks like MYHA and STJ were both very competitive with the top Atlantic 10U AA girls teams - I would assume both programs have a good number of Tier 1 talents on them. I'm sure if you merged those teams together they would have been one of if not the best team in the league.
If they would have made 10U teams out of the Reston, MYHA, and STJ girls in those programs this year I'd bet the top team would be #10-20 in the country and the second team would be number #50-60.
