Honest question here: What traumatic or definitive event happened that seemingly has led to an entire generation of first time parents who just don't want to discipline or parent their children? Was it 9/11? The rise of social media? Or did everyone born in in the 80s and 90s just get spanked a little too often? There has to be some reason as to why child behavior is considerably a larger problem now than it ever has been before.
I don’t think it’s primarily students and parents who have changed. I think a lot of kids used to get pushed out of school quicker. Every school system had some kind of alternative school and a serious incident got kids booted to the alternative school for a couple months at least. It was very disruptive to the education of those kids. It was racist in application. It pushed those kids towards dropping out altogether. But it took them out of the regular high schools. Maybe there is also some loss of impulse control from screens/divided attention. Maybe parents interact with kids a bit less because of smart phones and screens. Maybe all of society is just a little more valorizing being selfish and put for oneself instead of being a good community member. But I don’t think people are that different. I just think principals used to be able to send kids to Mark Twain if they had consistent dangerous behavior issues and the parents couldn’t or wouldn’t solve it.
