How long does it usually take an MLS Next or ECNL club to work through offers? How many do they send out at a time and how long do they give players to respond (theoretically)? At what point do you give up any hope?
After the first ID session (assuming its a club that does big open ones vs an Alexandria style one) it’s usually 24/36 hours to release the first wave of offers - typically 10-14. You are given 48 hours to respond but can ask for extra time (I’ve only ever asked for a weekend but I’m sure others push for more). It’s often mostly players that already play for the club in that group with a handful (2-3 usually) of external players that were most likely on their radar before tryouts. After that it gets long because they are often looking for specific holes to build out their team. Don’t despair yet, particularly if they are still holding ID sessions - your kid might be what they are looking for.
Last ID session was last night. A teammate (different position) got an offer. No idea about any others. The coaches mentioned the possibility of an additional invite-only session to fill out the last couple of spots. But we have heard nothing. Feeling bad for my kid who felt like they did well. :(
I’m sorry. I do find it encouraging that the coaches are talking to you or your kid about invite-only sessions. Those usually mean they are serious about you and looking at chemistry and how you fit in their environment. It’s heartbreaking because this isn’t like the 100m where someone is objectively faster. You kid probably did do really well and probably deserves an offer and a lot of this is dumb luck or down to positional needs. Sending good vibes…
Thanks. Unfortunately the mention of the possible invite only session was to the entire group, not just a few kids. I know it's a numbers game, and I also know that the coaches are less familiar with my kid than the teammate who got an offer. Do they ever tell you if your kid was close to making the cut? I feel like it would make them feel better if they knew they weren't so far off. From what they said/what I saw,, they were actively involved and making good things happen in the scrimmages. They seemed to genuinely enjoy and felt proud of themselves after each tryout. It would be easier to help my kid manage their feelings if the level of play was clearly above where my kid is right now. Before this started I had the sense they were right on the bubble, and this process seems to be confirming that. It's a tough place to be.
That's a great place to be. Motivation. Use that pain as motivation. Lesson learned for life that transitions into all aspects of life and not just soccer.
