You have to marry someone who has an equally good job. It’s hard to make enough money on your own. There is a huge financial benefit to combining households. Think about how much of a mortgage you could afford on a $125-$150k salary. It’s adequate for a single person but you’re still looking at a small condo. Then imagine you make that and so does your husband so you have a HHI of $250-$300k. And then one of you gets a better job in your late 30s or early 40s and now you’re making $250k and the other partner is making $150k and has some flexibility with their seniority. Maybe stock options come into the picture too. Getting married to the right person makes all the difference.
Could not disagree more for middle class people. My two sisters went that route. Neither my sister or the husband could really devote thenselves fully to work. In the end both sisters dug a hole with childcare, daycare costs, neither got far in career as both always running out the door. My sister the teacher was making 100k and husband 120k my other sister at 150k and 100k. Sounds good, but the had double expenses and day care. Meanwhile my brother and I with stay at home wife’s were making 450k a year. Not a surprise available to work 24/7 you move quicker. Trouble is men and women have egos. Look at Barrack Obama or JD Vance or Joe Biden they got ahead as wife supported them. Mary Bara CEO of GM has a stay at home husband just like the women who is law partner on my block. They had husbands who support them. Sucks but making money is not a talent everyone has. And if one has talent let him or her go for it
