NYPD at one point had 40,000 officers. They’re down 5,000 from that and can’t keep their recruitment above water. Mamdani currently says he wants to keep the current staffing number, but will he be upset if attrition continues and recruiting stalls? I doubt it. He can reduce headcount just by being himself at work every day and not prioritizing recruiting.
This is not a Mamdani problem. And people that are foaming at the mouth are just trying to sabotage NYC and make his administration, and by default the city, fail. Police departments around the country are all having staffing shortages and it's sad that they're trying to undercut each other by promoting racist accusations. Ed Koch (1978–89) David Dinkins (1990–93) Rudy Giuliani (1994–2001) Michael Bloomberg (2002–13) Bill de Blasio (2014–21) Eric Adams (2022- )
