If your FIL is at all amenable to a rational conversation, could you approach him to stop funding the policies and gift you the premiums instead? You could purchase term insurance and invest the remainder. If he won't, he wont - it's his money - but if his intention is to pass it along to his son and grandkids there are much, much better ways to go about it. [/quote]
