Anyone has the directive memo from ECNL to refs and coaches demanding aggressive play?
Happens after every ECNL event when coaches complain that the refs were calling to many things and because of this they would like that ref removed from the rotation. Put another way coaches cant win without overly physical play so please remove the ref that keeps calling them on it.
So you’re saying that ECNL coaches from around the country call the local assigner after an event? Or the coaches from around the country call the league and then the league calls the assigner?
The role is called League Director and Tournament Director and yes coaches, docs, club owners, and even parents contact them complaining about refs all the time. Its the League/Tournament directors job to defend the refs but what do you think happens when the club owner that is sponsoring the tournament (and therefore paying the tournament director) complains about a ref calling too much?
I'm ignorant of this behind the scenes process. Of course people complain in the background, but don't most big tournaments outsource the logistical parts? Why would a club complain about or protect one random ref? Also ECNL runs their own events and the reffing seems the same as any other random tournament. I said earlier in the thread, the premise is simply flawed.
Theres only so many refs and yes a League/Tournament Director can ban a ref from officiating games from their league or event. I'll give you an example from another extreme. We had a ref one time that was awful. Crazy calls, got into a screaming fight with coaches. called the game with 5 minutes on the clock, and the most amazing part got into a fist fight with other refs after the game. Everyone had the tournament director on speed dial and the ref was gone, ejected from the tournament within 30 minutes. The example is just to show how the process works in an extreme situation. Coaches getting refs to "swallow their whistle" is more subtle. They'll complain through their DOCs or Club Owners by threatening to not play in a tournament if a certain ref is officiating. Or they'll all complain about a certain ref as a group. Over time they'll grind refs into either officiating the way the want or you'll get pushed out.
Thanks, very informative.
Keep the conspiracy theories coming.
