The incidence of Feline Injection Site Sarcoma is statistically higher following rabies vaccination than death from rabies in unvaccinated indoor cats. FISS can be aggressive and lethal if not caught. It can be mitigated by cutting off the affected leg, though.
Our vet said the risk can be mitigated by doing the one-year instead of the three-year shot (less inflammation) and the adjuvant-free PureVax. They also do it as low down on the leg as possible. But I still worry about it.
Just to add - while it may be true that the risk of the shot is higher for indoor cats, we’ve had TWO bats somehow get into our home over a 10 year period (I remember posting here about it the first time). Animal Control came and were able to test them for rabies (negative, thankfully) but my indoor cats went after them both times! Do we will never miss the shot.
And this is OP, btw; I posed the original question out of pure curiosity, because my vet always gives me the little metal tag after vaccination. I did not participate in the brawl, I promise! I did not intend for that to happen.
