I would stay away from milk now too https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/us-fda-suspends-milk-quality-tests-amid-workforce-cuts-2025-04-21/ As the historian Jared Yates Sexton notes: They’re cutting food inspections and medical research and education and climate forecasting and dismantling anything compiling empirical data because they believe our lives are expendable and nothing compared to their own enrichment and whatever bullshit agenda they push. These aren’t “mistakes.” They aren’t accidentally doing this or making ill-informed decisions. The purpose is to deal a final death blow to any system that even remotely considers the fates or lives of anyone who doesn’t populate the oligarchical class.
The problem with this analysis is the assumption that the DC establishment had been doing a great job until Trump upset the apple cart for no reason 5 minutes ago. The reality is that most of our regulatory agencies are completely captured by the industries they regulate. This is a natural and well-understood phenomenon, well-articulated by academic studies into regulatory capture and public choice theory. It’s the way of the world, although worse here than most places because of how much money there is in our politics and how much revolving door career management there is in our regulatory agencies. Most public health, safety, medical, food, and chemical regulators in the USA, even if good people, act in ways that dramatically prioritize corporate products over consumer safety. Agencies like the FDA and USDA and CDC are generally working AGAINST your health and safety interests whenever those are in conflict with industry profit maximization. Many hyperpartisan, establientarian DC Democrats who aren’t directly complicit in this are still either unaware of this or in denial of it. Not because they have looked into it and found effective regulatory agencies, but because they hate Trump, hate critics of the establishment, etc. The truth is, if we want safe food, we HAVE to gut the captured regulatory agencies as a minimum first step. The current people (even though well intentioned) and current processes doing more harm than good for public safety. Democratic failure to understand this is hurting Democrats at the ballot box. In knee jerk opposition to alleged wannabe swamp drainer Trump, Democrats painted themselves into a box of owning the current corrupt and ineffective establishment status quo. This is a terrible position for Democrats to be in. The establishment arranged to funnel ALL the productivity gains of the computer revolution, the internet revolution, the global trade revolution, etc to the top 20% of incomes (and most to the top 1% and 0.1%). The working and middle classes got robbed. Voters are NOT in any mood to defend the establishment who did this to them (of “failed to prevent it”). But Democrats are now the defenders of that establishment.
