Stanford club team coach for my kid’s sport reached out to DC (who had previously reached out in fall). Wondered if kid might be coming to visit. We are making a visit later this week. Thoughts? Mean anything? Can a very competitive club teams at Stanford also submit athlete lists to the admissions office? Is this related to funding?
Totally school/sport dependent, but usually club teams do not have formal admissions relationships/slots. If the club team is very strong, though, the admissions office almost certainly knows about it and will probably see high-level participation in that sport as a plus for an applicant. If your kid is good at their sport/on a known top team, the club sport reached out because they want your kid to go to Stanford and are trying to make it an appealing option to your kid if they get in. I have a kid in this situation—high performing on a top team in a sport that has a long, successful club history at a highly competitive school—and they do this sort of recruitment. They don’t have any formal admissions relationship, but it does seem like kids from our school who are highly qualified applicants and good at this sport have a little bit of an edge.
