People need to come together after something awful happens, like the crash at National Airport last night, but they don't need religion to do it. It makes me sick to hear people invoke God for comfort after the crash, when God, if he existed, supposedly could have prevented the crash. It would be nice if people could just come together after a tragedy without pulling religion into it.
You've just alienated religious people for how they (allegedly) grieve during a tragedy. But please, show us a way to grieve that will really bring people together.
And you've alienated non-religious or non-christians, assuming you approve of the crosses set out on the highway.
The motto of the United States is "In God We Trust". It was adopted by Congress in 1956 and officially established by President Dwight Eisenhower. The motto originated during the American Civil War, when Union supporters wanted to show their faith in God and boost morale. The motto first appeared on coins in 1864, and became more widely accepted in the 1950s. The motto appears on the reverse of the $20 bill. The phrase "In God is our trust" appears in the fourth stanza of the US national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner". Crosses on the highway are offensive to you? Because you think that people mourning in their faith tradition is forbidden?
