I teach college, and we have more cheating than ever going on now. But there are two other things that are different. I see a lot more 'grey area' stuff that's on the edge of cheating but not quite there (students recycling their own work, for example, which technically is disallowed if it's a whole assignment - but what if it's only part of it?). I also see a lot less remorse. They may be angry that they're having to serve the consequences, but they don't necessarily see themselves as having done much of anything wrong.
Whenever the recent Harvard president’s plagiarism issues come up on DCUM, I’m amazed by how many people leap to her defense, saying things like “president is not an academic position” & “she only plagiarized in areas that were not key parts of her research.”
Funny. I'm a Harvard undergrad and Law grad and was involved in that incident. Those are b.s. comments that must be part of some liberal propaganda about the event because those involved in the matter know it for it was. 1) The Board screwed up royally for the nomination; (2) Many in the Harvard community raised concerns about her eligibity and suitability (she had never held a university or college administrative post before); 3) many, self included, questioned her academic record (very little writing done in a very narrow area) but 4) no, the Board (now in shambles) wanted her for the DEI bragging rights; so 5) many alums did not attend her inauguration two summers ago because they felt the board had screwed up, so were not surprised when 6) her inexperience was demonstrated when she was MIA and nonresponsive (!) during the first of the pro-Hamas protests at Harvard -at a time when Harvard could have taken the lead in the matter for all colleges in the US, followed by (7) her disastrous performance before congress; (8) discovery of the plagiarism, which became a bigger and bigger issue while she and the Board tried to find excuses to fight it; at which point she made an ill-timed decision to go on a $$ ("well we already had it booked") vacation out of the country, at which the board had to call her to say it was over, followed by her 9) immature op-eds in the press which no one paid attention to; all of which resulted on 10) humiliation of the University; upset on the Board, still ongoing; the installation of a well-liked conservative as provost to provide "adult supervision" over the mess and a search for a new President.
