MD is obviously going to go to Harris. That makes the Senate race much more interesting. I really like Hogan. I think of him as an old guard Republican. AA is too liberal for me. However putting Hogan in the Senate will shift the balance and I don’t think he will be able to get anything done. He’ll go from having a lot of power as gov. to having very little power in the senate. He keeps saying he’ll do what’s right for MD. On most issues that would mean voting against his party.
Maryland is solidly blue, but it’s not a terribly progressive state, more moderate Democrats. It will be interesting to see how many of them will vote for Hogan out of protest since they already know that the state will go to Harris. It reminds me of how the polls failed to really capture Trump support in 2016.
Your claim here is that Democrats will vote for Hogan out of protest against Democrats. Angela Alsobrooks is not a progressive Democrat. She's a basic, moderate Democrat. I think that people who say "Angela Alsobrooks is too liberal for me" are actually objecting to other things about her.
No one said that. They might vote for Hogan out of protest of other things happening because they are provided no other outlet. Plenty of people are willing to put a gun to their own heads by not voting for Harris because they want to support people that would gladly kill them, that’s not in question, so why question this? When people feel like they have no other choice they do interesting things. A lot of people feel that Maryland will remain blue for the Presidency no matter what so they are willing to risk voting for Hogan because he seems sane and he might bring some balance back to Maryland. To many it seems that the state is shifting too far to the left and they have no urge to find themselves living in the next Portland, San Francisco, or Seattle.
"the state is shifting too far to the left" and "AA is too liberal for me" both mean the same thing, and it doesn't have anything to do with the actual politics and policies of Wes Moore or Angela Alsobrooks.
PP acknowledges that may be the case, but notes that the further left actions of others, not on the ballot this cycle, could cause a protest vote to happen, even if it might not be the most rational choice.
PP does not acknowledge that may be the case.
The way I read it was that "No one said that" was an acknowledgement that the state shifting too far to the left was not necessarily indicative of Alsobrooks' "actual politics." But the politics of the situation is not limited to Alsobrooks' actual politics. Nothing happens in a vacuum.
