Can I ask why this is an issue? Most of the kids don’t win. Their PR or whatever is still the same if they’re in 4th or 5th. If a kid gets second by a fraction and the winner is in a tech suit, isn’t it apparent? Why isn’t it just as good for your kid to be second? Both kids are still slower than the top kids in the region/country, right? I get worrying about things like this more in soccer or anything where the matches are kind of unique, but swimming? You have a metric that’s relatively comparable across competitions, so what difference does it make if you are first or third in a particular pool on a particular day?
Summer swim is a team sport. The top 3 finishers score points toward an overall team score. Plenty of points are lost by hundredths of seconds. So if one swimmer wears an expensive suit to gain the tiniest advantage and another swimmer doesn’t, it does make a difference.
