Where are all these tall kids? My daughter is in a large basketball camp ages 10-16. They took a picture of them and the wall behind them had a black line. My 12 year old daughter is 5’4”, not tall, and she was a little past the black line. There were only about three other girls who were past that line. There were a few tall boys but most were just average. In school, in activities the really tall kids are a small minority. What do your tall kids do all summer?
The tall sports kids are probably busy with more competitive teams and programs rather than at camp…. I’ve seen a lot of taller/earlier to mature kids end up on a different track (ultra competitive teams/training programs made up of all tall/big kids) quite early. So, you don’t see many on lower level teams or regular camps past a certain age. My 3 teens have all been later bloomers so this did not apply to them, but was the case for many friends. Often things change after they all go through puberty and things rearrange a bit.
Tall does not equal sports ability. I have no idea about “ultra competitive teams” or training programs. I have short people and tall people in my family, also athletic. My siblings and cousins did no training programs, they played varsity sports, some played college D1, some went professional. I know it’s different now but I have no experience with it. My 12 year old daughter did not start early but she’s going for six weeks full time and she loves it. I’m not sure she’d like super competitive though. My niece is a senior and she plays varsity basketball all four years with no special training program. She’s 5’9”. My nephew, on the small side, is playing D1 lacrosse. He started in high school and added a fifth year prep school. The ones in my family who actually train extensively are the ballet students. Sports is more casual fun. Can you explain how they train and what is their goal? It’s interesting.
Truth! I know plenty of short athletes.
