How exactly do poor people buy cigarettes or a bottle of wine? Or get public assistance?
False equivalence. Are you really this dense? How many stores actually card someone who looks of age? Clerks at the liquor store do not always need to ask for ID if the person appears older than a certain age (and that age varies by state). I’m in my 50s and it’s been a good 20 years since I’ve been carded to purchase alcohol. You can also always get someone else to buy it for you if they check. And to your second, point, they can't get public assistance: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/what-happens-to-people-who-cant-prove-who-they-are/2017/06/14/fc0aaca2-4215-11e7-adba-394ee67a7582_story.html "For poor Americans, IDs are a lifeline — a key to unlocking services and opportunities, from housing to jobs to education. And in states with strict voter ID laws, the lack of an ID can hinder voting. “This is a huge issue for people who are homeless and poor in general,” says Maria Foscarinis, executive director of the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty. “Without an ID, basically you don’t exist.” "The Rev. Ben Roberts, Foundry's director of social justice ministries, oversees its ID operation...Without obstacles, the ID process could take about two weeks, but for many clients, he says, it lasts two to three months. "It mostly has to do with finding the time, energy and motivation to go to places and be told, 'No,' constantly," he explains." Repeat after me. Make it cheap, easy and accessible to get a voter ID. Do that first and you'd get the support from Democrats. Oh, while we're at it, stop closing DMVs and limiting the hours of operation in places that target POCs.
