As to why - because they know the person in the White House for the next four years won't be able to magically fix this economy.  They know things are going to continue to suck for a long time (although I believe the trends right now are that things are improving, albeit slowly).  I think they know that in 2016 there will be a regime change and they don't want to see another two term dem.  They want a shot at two terms in 2016.  They don't want a one termer in 2012.
