As an influential parent with access to the principal, I think there probably are influential parents who have some influence, but it is subtle influence. It's true that when you put a lot of time into the school, you build a lot of capital with the principal. The principal needs parents to run events and raise money. Money can go into helping low income kids go on field trips or to bring in interesting afterschool programs or just help teachers with supplies so they can do a better job. That is critical stuff that needs to get done to make the school work well. If putting a kid in Mrs B's class helps a key parent, then that seems normal to me. That all said, we have never made requests. The main reason is that I trust all the teachers in our school. Some of them are less than communicative with me, but the kids like them and are doing well. It is good for my kids to be exposed to different teaching styles and temperaments just like they will see in college and in the work place. If I have a specific issue with a teacher, I will raise it then. I rarely have specific issues with teachers. Exactly!!! I believe that you can influence a bit in our school. I am a SAHM and at the school almost daily but I am uncomfortable asking for special treatment. I have no desire to micro-manage my kids' lives and while I have been tempted, I want my children to learn how to adapt to various situations, people whatever in a constructive way. Life gets more complicated as you get older and enter the upper grades, then college and beyond. You don't pick your professors, bosses, co-workers, roomates etc, so the sooner kids learn to deal with whatever situations and people they are given the better for them in the long run.
