Because VT has LONG WL the top applicants. They suspect it is a safety and they they USED to say if you are high stat and want in, you have to ED so they know you are serious. They waitlisted my 4.6GPA top 1% of class, 1580 single attempt SAT, leader of every tech club out there kid also a couple years ago and gave direct admits to truckloads of kids with lower stats from his school. He declined the WL but we were told by an AO that he WOULD get in from the WL but as high stats you either go in ED or WL.   That is their MO and has been for a long time. I expect my next comparably mediocre kid to get in next year bc he is in their sweet spot. Obviously nothing to worry about for you- plenty of excellent options.[/quote]
