He is telling stories because polls say he is losing a small but maybe significant margin  of the black vote to Trump. I highly doubt he was arrested on the porch with a black family during the civil rights era.

At least he didn’t say  “I marched with Dr.MLK”. Bernie Sanders said this as well (though he probably did March). It’s kinda a joke in black circles that even black elders lie and say this to seem more important. Since the march was so large; there’s no way to proof someone was or wasn’t there.[/quote]

He did claim he was arrested in South Africa with the UN ambassador trying to see Nelson Mandela.  
He was awarded a "pants on fire" designation by Politifact and 4 Pinocchios by the WaPo for that claim.

He also claimed he was arrested in Delaware protesting for civil rights.
