It did always seem like Virginians had their own center of gravity and would rarely say “DC” rather say Alexandria or Fairfax - but Marylanders, even from outside the beltway, would say DC.  I think it’s about where your center of gravity was growing up and where the nexus of “stuff” was.  Virginia has a lot of areas not socially close to DC at all.  Whereas a lot of the areas of Maryland never seemed that socially separate from DC . I guess some of it is the land border but socially there seems to be affinity between Maryland and DC (both WOTR and EOTR) and Virginia was always different.  [/quote]
