My sister lived with her boyfriend/future husband before marriage in the mid 1970s and my parents were so upset. I did the same in 1990 (I'm much younger) and my parents were delighted.

There was so much shame about children born before marriage, born too early or unwed mothers. And now people routinely get married when kids are toddlers or have a child on their own. I know several people like this.

I'm glad all these particular beliefs are gone. People in many ways are kinder and more accepting than they used to be.

The decline of the “traditional family” arose out of the divorce boom that began in the 70s. The problem wasn’t a lack of marriage, the problem was the breakup of families and the fact that so many households were headed up by one struggling parent who hadn’t planned on parenting alone. Lots of problems there: the pain associated with absent fathers, poverty, and mothers focused on things other than their children.

None of these issues would be present in a functional two-parent household today in which the parents have opted out of the (arguably out of date) traditional marriage. And these problems would be less likely in a household headed up by a woman who actively chose single motherhood.
