Most of the black friends I have didn't grow up swimming. They didn't have cottages or go to lakes / beaches or spend summers camping. They did talk about not wanting their hair in chlorine. Their families just didn't spend summers at the pool. They want to learn to swim now, but still don't want their hair to get wet! they have put their kids in swimming lessons and have come camping so I think at least in my circle, this generation is making changes.
I'm black and I honestly don't want to get my hair wet too much. But it depends on the hairstyle. I have a shorter style that is usually curled, so getting it wet all the time would SUCK. I do my hair to last most of the week. If I went swimming a lot, I would have to wash and curl my hair everyday. And if I have extensions, it's even worse for maintenance. Constantly wetting the hair and having to wash, dry and curl it would turn into a 1+hour ordeal.
