Just FWIW, although there is a lot of discussion about caloric drinks and the obesity epidemic, many of my childhood nutrition books also say the opposite: kids, unlike adults, CAN fill up on liquids, so if there is any concern about your child not gaining enough weight (and this may not be a concern for you-- my daughter is in a low percentile and is perfectly healthy), it's a bad idea to let her fill up on juice. I know that if my daughter gets a juice box, she will not eat any of the snack that accompanies it, because the juice is just so totally Awesome and Enough for her. Said juice box contains only 40 calories. A meager snack for a growing girl.
I'm moderately concerned about my child's lack of weight gain -- 5th %ile BMI is not normal for him and I am trying to encourage him to eat and drink more calories! Most of his life his weight was in the 25th %ile and now is at the 5th %ile so no, that is not normal for him. I do encourage him to drink juice because everyone seems to think it is high calorie -- I don't see the juice as being "empty calories" though. He drinks "Naked" juice green machine primarily; about 1/2 of a serving so about 70 calories and a decent amount of vitamins. http://nakedjuice.com/our-products/juice/green-machine He also drinks a lot of milk so he gets some protein and much calcium.
