Wake was under 4K students when I attended (98 grad). It was the perfect "not too big, not too small" size for me. It was a good fit for me academically and socially. I definitely would not have liked a large state school in comparison. With costs as they are NOW, different factors would play into the decision. We do OK, but we are targeting schools that cost no more than $35K/year after any "aid" (and obviously hoping for less than that!) for our current senior. I still do think that a school like Wake is a pretty idyllic place to go to school - Gorgeous campus, very bright classmates/peers, engaging and accessible professors, small class sizes, etc. There is one school on my child's list that is pretty far from home but very much reminds me of my alma mater (size and campus) and I feel would be a very similar experience.
4K is too small
that is YOUR opinion, not everyone's. I loved it - picture perfect campus, didn't know EVERYONE on campus, but definitely had the advantages of a small school where the classes were small and the professors knew your name. I was in marching band, I joined a sorority, and I just generally enjoyed my time for my 4 years in my safe bubble. My husband and I actually got married on St Croix because of Tim Duncan, who was a Wake alum but played basketball in my husband's hometown for the Spurs. When I was touring schools before picking Wake out of the 5 acceptances I had, I didn't like the smaller schools (2K) and felt very at home in the 3-4K sweet spot (Wake and Bucknell) My own child has schools between ~500 students (Randolph College) and 20K (ODU) on her list she has applied to. Her top choice is actually a school that is just over 1K students in MA. There are two more between 1200-1500. The school that reminds me a bit of Wake is a not well known school outside of St Louis, but it is D1 sports (recent change) and has ~4K students, as well as the campus look/feel/size is similar. All these schools have their plusses and minuses. I have enjoyed seeing schools I had never thought of before in our search. She isn't anything like me as a student and has things she needs in a school that weren't even a thought for me. WRT costs - Wake's costs are absolutely eye popping. We are shooting for schools that will come in below $35K, hopefully even less.
