She has emasculated him so fully, it makes me wonder what other secrets she has on him. I cannot imagine why he hasn't moved on from this mess. He is an incredibly talented man. Why has he remained entangled in this situation?
Incredibly talented? I don’t know. He’s like Julia Roberts, you never forget he’s Will Smith in whatever role he’s playing, even when he plays it well. Helen Mirren - that’s incredibly talented. Or Anthony Hopkins.
I think Will Smith had (has?) a lot of true acting talent, and when he's able to really work at it and channel it, he's incredibly compelling as an actor. Not just charismatic. Did you ever see him in Six Degrees of Separation? Also, even though the movie itself was not good (too long and tried to do too much), he was really phenomenal in the Mohammed Ali biopic, for which he won an Oscar. He's also very good in I Am Legend, which is hard to pull off on charisma alone because it's just him for most of the movie. He had to nail the emotional notes and he really does. And while not as big of a challenge acting-wise, he also shows quite a bit of emotional range in Independence Day -- it's not just schlocky catch phrases, there's some emotional heft to his role. Plus he has real comedic chops -- great timing, can do physical comedy, plays well with others. He's really terrific in Men in Black and Hitch, for instance. It honestly makes me sad what has become of him and his career. Here's someone with real dramatic range, who can also do comedy, AND who sings, writes his own music, and is a truly talented dancer. Plus he's tall and handsome with an expressive face. But in addition to some really terrific performances, he's also done a LOT of terrible movies. And he clearly has some kind of emotional immaturity. In a way I think that's what made him a good actor, especially in his early days when I think he just tapped into that raw emotion for a lot of his roles and it's really compelling on screen. But he's never really found a way to manage that side of it while also maturing and developing as a person. I think he's stunted, and now that he's in his 50s, that kind of raw emotion isn't so compelling in the sorts of roles he plays. He's become more wooden in his dramatic roles and less loose and lively in comedies. And when you see what is going on in his marriage, and with him personally, you can see why. I think he just needs to grow up.
