Looks really mattered. I recall fresh with my MBA in 1991 taking train to Manhattan having wrote down addresses of HR departments from the US Job Bank Book in reference section of library. I had my best suit, Seiko watch, freshly shined shoes, new white shirt and power tie with a fancy briefcase.

Being six foot two inch, in shape good looking white man with a firm handshake and single in my 20s I got interviews same day some places.

Today it just goes into black hole of the applicant tracking system when they query it based on data.

Downside no more rags to riches stories. But remember back in day HR was full of young single girls. A good looking young single guy in person hard to turn down. Nowadays HR is more balanced with older married people.
