I've been married for 35 years. I gave up my career to raise our children, who are now grown. I've been looking for a job, but can't find one. No one wants to hire an older woman who has no job and has not worked for 35 years. I got some training at my local CC, but it made no difference. I'm unemployable. I doubt I'd get hired at Starbucks (no barista experience!). If my husband and I divorced, I would starve if I didn't receive permanent alimony. For younger women who didn't give up their careers, it's a completely different situation.
You aren't unemployable. But you would most likely have to accept a very low wage job. You could work at a deli in a grocery store. You could work in a cafeteria. C'mon seriously. Do you not even see older women working in these low paying jobs? Would you be able to afford the lifestyle you have now? No, you would not at all.
I would guess she can't find a job because of her attitude that she shouldn't work low skill jobs comes through. I don't believe for a second that you can't find employment as a receptionist or customer service or something. If that's beneath you, go run the register in a museum cafeteria - those are frequently manned by older people. If assets, including retirement, is split 50/50, there's no reason for alimony past retirement age.
