OP here. Thanks for the feedback so far! Meredith was on one of my lists but vetoed by my DH because he claims he's never heard it before (??? sometimes I think he's an alien) and it sounds to his ear like "Merry-Death." We both get full veto power so it's out, and also now I'll never see that name without thinking Merry-Death, I guess. Thanks, DH. I do like Megan, though! I will test it out with him. Do people have spelling/pronunciation thoughts on that one? Meghan? Megan? Meagan? Also, wildcard, but the name Megan made me think of Brooke, which I like. Thoughts on that?
At first, I thought we just had different taste bc the only name I like from your list is Molly. I actually love Molly and have no issue with the “it’s a nickname” idea, I am a person who feels strongly about nn names bc I hate my full name and have used my nn my whole life, wish it was just my name. But then Megan is another of my favorites. I also love Morgan. I have a Reagan (rhymes with Megan) and wish I had used one of these two instead. I am a big fan of the Megan spelling and common pronunciation. I like Brooke fine. Love Brynn if that falls in line for you.
Reagan rhymes with Megan? What? Reagan=ray-gan whereas Megan=Meg (short e sound, not mayg)-an
I was guessing Ree-gun and Mee-gun.
I have a pretty standard American accent (no one says I have an accent) and Reagan and Megan rhyme to me. Ray-gan May-gan
I have never heard anyone say May-gan. I grew up in the south and have also lived in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest. Known lots of Megans. It has always been pronounced Meg (rhymes with peg) Anne.
OP here and I guess I've actually heard it both ways. I say Meg-an, but I've heard people say May-gan. Which is actually a strike against this name for me, I think -- I don't want pronunciation issues. I also like the name Laura but I've discovered that there is debate on how it's supposed to be pronounced and I just don't want to wade in. Probably also a strike against Theodora unless we went by her full name or did a nn like Teddy or Dora (both of which I think are cute but I don't think suit our family as well). And I'm convinced by the Maxie/Maxine debate to drop that one as well. Also ruling out Michaela, Molly, and Calliope for various reasons (I'm really sad about Calliope, it was my favorite for a time but DH has soured on it). So new list is: Rhiannon (probably front runner, sorry folks -- I still love it a lot despite the people on here who don't, which is a sign) Miranda (DH's favorite and I really love it too) Daphne/Daisy (tied, and we've eliminated Margaret as an option, so these are our reserve "cute whimsy" names if that's what we're feeling) Virginia/Ginny (splits the difference between our more classic/longer front runners and the cute whimsy names, though we don't like it as well as the others) Brooke (dark horse) I think this is a good list that gives us nice options moving forward. It might be good to get it down to three before I get to my due date, but sees like it might be a gamete decision. Thanks all for the feedback! This was helpful and MUCH better than discussing it with my mom (who will probably hate all these names and tell us we should have named her something insane like Brandy, I don't know).
I am PP who said my Reagan rhymes with Megan and this is why I wish I had just gone with Megan :) I don't think people question the pronunciation of Megan with this spelling much, the default is like Meg. it's the RAY-gan that I don't like, especially if it is nasally, which came with grandparents' midwest accent and drove me nuts! I like your dark horse the best OP!
