You don't need an elaborate backstory, but having a "home planet" and occupation or brief reason for being on the trip can help with interactions. We went pretty simple costume-wise - more in the cargo pants/vest style, with a bit of jedi robe inspiration for my husband.

Make sure you have the Disney Parks app installed (as well as the My Disney Experience) one, and get familiar with it before you go, since you'll be getting messages and missions through that app. And know that there is so much going on and so many parallel story arcs -- you will not be able to do everything, but you will have so much fun with the adventures you get sucked into.
