I have a hard time believing students are reading two years below grade level and getting into a center. Maybe for one special dyslexic student or something like that, but otherwise I don't see it. What's the reasoning for all these tests, grades, and GRBS scores then? Do they not even look at them?
Wow! This thread has really changed from its original intent! To give one answer to your question, my kid is in a center school. According to my child, the really smart kids (abot 1/5 of the class) go up one grade with the older AAP class for math and everyone else works on the exact same thing. In the other subjects, they stay together. My child says everyone in the class reads really well, and if given the choice the class will pick sitting at their desks reading over recess, a movie or any other fun activity. There are a couple of kids with ADD and the like, but it is more of a focus/sitting still/making noises issue than an academic issue. 2 of the boys that my child calls the smartest in the class have ADHD, but the teacher deals with those types kids wonderfully. Back to the original purpose of the thread. The most ridiculous thing I see posted repeatedly by AAP parents is: "The kids I really feel sorry for are the ones who are profoundly gifted. All these people prepping and appealing and scheming are really watering down the class for the kids who really need it and are ruining it for them. Of course, my darling child is not one of the profoundly gifted, she got in with the minimum score, but is thriving at center. All these appeal kids and their tiger moms are ruining the class for those poor, profoundly gifted kids." (Btw, we welcome everyone who qualifies for the program, whether through appeal, prepping or whatever. It only helps to give the kids a more normalized learning experience, which is why we wanted the program for our kid in the first place. But I digress...) :)
