NP here, and I’m similar to both of you (also with a JD), I have in-laws like this, and it’s NOT “endlessly fun” or “exciting.” It’s having to navigate holidays and family gatherings with people who tell you that your kids are going to die because you got them vaccinated and who say horribly racist things. It wears on you, makes you sad, and [b]you don’t want your children around the dialogue. [[/b]/quote]

This part  - THE DIALOGUE - is SO TRUE.  We just spent a holiday with the cousins that we grew up with, on my side.  We laughed for hours, and there was food abound and about thirty close relatives packed in. Our family has always been warm, respectful, fun (NEVER at anyone else's expense), funny and open, you get what you get, and truly - the more the merrier. It is different when you grow up in a family that is big on appearances and favoritism (DH's side, which is cold also and demeaning).  The holiday was glorious, and I am still feeling the love days later.  Sometimes you just need to be around warm, accepting people that you have something in common with, not people looking to beat you down (I am posting this in two posts, because it is relevant). It is not always about profession or education - but how you TREAT other people.  A little mutual respect goes a LONG way. [/quote]
